Cancer is no longer a conversation reserved for later life.
Increasingly, it is touching people in their thirties, forties, and even younger people who are working, raising families, and often doing their best to live “healthy” lives.
A recent example of this was Tatiana Scholossberg (granddaughter of John F Kennedy), who died at 35. Talking about her diagnosis, she said;
“I did not – could not – believe that they were talking about me.” READ MORE HERE

On World Cancer Day, it feels important to pause and ask not just how cancer is treated, but why it is becoming more common, and what this means for how we care for our health moving forward.
Rather than focusing on fear or blame, a holistic perspective invites curiosity, understanding, and compassion — for ourselves and for the world we are living in.
A Changing Pattern
Globally, cancer diagnoses continue to rise. While part of this increase is linked to ageing populations and improved detection, a more concerning trend has emerged: a significant rise in early-onset cancers, diagnosed in people under the age of 50.
These are not isolated cases. They represent a broader shift — one that suggests cancer risk is no longer tied solely to age or a small number of well-known behaviours. Instead, it reflects the cumulative pressures placed on the human body over time.
This does not mean that cancer is inevitable.
But it does mean the story is more complex than we were taught.
Beyond Single Causes
For decades, cancer prevention messaging focused on individual risk factors: smoking, alcohol, and excessive sun exposure. These remain important, and reducing them still matters.
Yet many people being diagnosed today do not fit the traditional picture. They may have never smoked, may eat relatively well, and may exercise regularly.
A holistic lens helps us see that health is shaped not by one habit, but by the total environment we live within — both externally and internally.
This includes:
- The quality of the food we eat
- The consistency of our sleep
- Our exposure to environmental chemicals
- The level of chronic stress we carry
- How supported or overwhelmed our nervous systems are
- Trauma
Over time, these factors interact, shaping the internal terrain of the body.
The Body as an Ecosystem
Your body is not a collection of separate parts, but an interconnected ecosystem.
Immune function, inflammation, metabolism, gut health, hormones, and emotions are all links in your chain of health & well-being. When one area is under constant strain, you are compromising the entire system. When one part fails, the whole chain is at risk.
Cancer, from this perspective, does not appear overnight.
It thrives when your internal environment has been stripped of its ability to heal and repair.
By the time you see the symptoms, the ecosystem has been failing for years.
This understanding is not about guilt or personal failure.
It is about recognising that modern life places unique demands on the human body — demands we were never biologically designed to carry.
Supporting Health Before Illness
Holistic health focuses on creating conditions where health is more likely to thrive.
Foundational practices include:
- Eating whole, nutrient-dense foods that support cellular repair
- Reducing ultra-processed foods where possible
- Prioritising consistent, restorative sleep
- Supporting gut health and digestion
- Moving the body in ways that feel sustainable
- Managing stress and calming the nervous system
- Reducing unnecessary chemical and toxin exposure
These practices are not trends, hacks or quick fixes.
They are quiet, steady acts of care that accumulate over time.
When Diagnosis Is Already Present
A cancer diagnosis changes everything. It affects not only the body, but also identity, relationships, emotions, and a sense of safety in the world.
Holistic approaches are not alternatives to medical treatment. They are foundational.
It is about getting the basics right and building on that. If the foundation of a building is weak or poorly constructed, it doesn’t matter how great the decor is.
Trust me, when the storms of life happen – and they will – personal loss, crushing stress, or a physical illness – the paint job won’t save you.
A weak foundation will buckle every time. It’s not a matter of if, but when.
You can’t optimise a system that is fundamentally broken.
Stop decorating and start reinforcing the foundation.
A Holistic approach will:
- Improving treatment tolerance
- Supporting immune and metabolic resilience
- Reducing stress and emotional overwhelm
- Preserving strength and energy
- Supporting quality of life during and after treatment
Healing is about supporting the whole person — physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
A Different Kind of Empowerment
Cancer is changing.
But so is our understanding of health.
A holistic perspective offers agency — keeping you in the driving seat about your health. The ability to make informed, compassionate choices that support the body over time.
On World Cancer Day, perhaps the most meaningful message is this:
Health is not built in moments of crisis alone, but in the quiet patterns of everyday life.
And every small act of care matters.
